In order to learn how beginners can succeed at the table, we consulted some experts. 

Use basic tactics.
According to gambling expert John Marchell, it's imperative to learn the proper way to hit, stand, split, and double down your hand. The house edge will drop from 1 to 2 percent to 0.5 percent thanks to you. 

Here is a primer from Marchell:

• When the dealer has 2-6 and you have a hand of 12–16, stand. 
• When the dealer has a 7-Ace and you have a hand of 12–16, hit.
• Always divide aces and eights.
• Against the dealer's 2-10, double 11.
• Double your Aces-6 or hit.

Bonus advice: Get a basic strategy card from the gift shop to save yourself the trouble of having to memorize everything. 

Stay away from insurance 

Don't make this stupid move, which is essentially another new bet with new money based on whether the dealer has blackjack, unless you're card counting. 

According to Marchel, "overall, the house has a nearly 6% advantage over the player with an insurance bet." And even if you have blackjack, your winnings will be limited to your initial wager. When the dealer has a blackjack, it's a push, meaning you can't win or lose. 

The dealer's up card, please

Check the dealer's up card before you do anything, advises Marchel. Is it negative (2–6) or positive (Ace–7)? "What the dealer has absolutely determines what the player should do." 

Avoid occupying the first base seat

In case the dealer is rushing, Marchel advises staying away from the first base chair. You'll have more time to examine your hand and the dealer's up card if you sit back further. 

Start Little 

If you (or a new dealer) just walked up to the table, do not immediately start operating at full capacity. To determine whether the dealer is "hot" or "cold," Marchel advises starting small. Although the casino never closes, you do. He cautions that "hot and cold streaks can have a big effect on the player." 

Do not believe the myths of gamblers.

It won't affect your hand what other players at the table decide. According to Scoblete, when you play against the dealer alone, neither party knows what the other has. 

And ignore the man who presents himself as an authority. Scoblete advises, "Just smile and play the right game, i.e. basic strategy.

Avoid being burned

Frank Scoblete, author of Beat Blackjack Now, advises setting a limit on how much you're willing to lose without limiting how much you can win.

Comps or casino freebies are not worth losing your monthly mortgage payment on.  

According to numerous studies conducted over the years, 75% of casino patrons will win at some point, but only 4% actually leave with winnings, claims Marchell. 

Move on if you're having a losing streak.
